26 Days of Planting: P is for Pomegranate

I'm not sure what I can say about this little pomegranate tree. I got it a while ago and didn't plant it until just today. I had ordered it online and when it turned up I kind of wanted to complain and send it back. It was much smaller than I had expected, and a lot of the branches were broken, the leaves yellowing and just all around not the healthy green plant I would have picked for myself.

But I am a hopeless complainer and I dislike conflict intensely, so instead of complaining I stewed and was cranky every time I looked at my unlovely new pomegranate.

Which explains why it spent a good few months in its plastic pot.
And then I made my new year's resolutions. This year for me is going to be all about trying to create a fabulously productive fruit and vegetable garden, which means not just throwing things at the ground like I am guilty of doing, but planting things slowly and trying hard to get it right. I want my pomegranate to look like the one in the photo above.

So I did something that I have never done before.

I bought some liquid fertilizer.

I felt like a criminal walking away with the stuff from the shops, and when I got home I quickly smuggled it out the back to the garden bench. I measured it out and watered my newly planted pomegranate in, before I lost my brand new fertilizing nerve.
I don't know why, but to me it felt like I was Doing A Bad Thing. I am fine with horse and cow manure that you buy for $2 on the side of the road, but organic liquid fertilizer from the shops? It all seems a bit serious to me.

If it gets results though, I might just start drinking the stuff myself.

You've done the right thing Ali...Sounds like it needs a bit of a kickstart...I know what you mean though, sometimes it's nice to think you can do it all on your own with out any help from those dreaded shops....:)

Well, that one certainly WILL be a challenge. Just picture what a sense of achievement you will feel when (after some months of careful nurturing by you) that pomegranite tree eventually bears fruit. If you had bought a "perfect" one, it might have seemed like cheating. Think of your one as the Ugly Duckling that will one day turn into a beautiful swan.

YAY! Pomegranate! I have lovely memories of picking pomegranates from my grandfathers tree as a child. He was Palestinian and grew all sorts of interesting things...
Liquid fertiliser is awesome!!! its just so damn expensive! It fixes all problems though i reckon!
I have had the same problem before buying a fig tree! I paid $25 and got a stick that was 10cm tall! 10cm!!! can you believe it! Im still angry that i cant put it in and it just sits in a large pot looking sorry. grrr!

How did you make the photo collage...please do share your secrets!

Yeah, I would like to know how you made the photo collage too. I buy Charlie Carp...it is liquid fertilizer made from European Carp which is an introduced species doing untold harm to Australian river systems. The perverse pleasure it gives me overcomes any qualms about buying it. It smells disgustingly fishy...has to be good!

Oh Ali I'd love to hear how the pomegranate goes! I have thought about getting one but haven't.....maybe I'll order one and some fish emulsion to go with! :)

Lol, I have buckled under the pressure of the collage requests, and I have done a collage tutorial. Which sounds very tricky, but it's just clicking a button on photo bucket!

And you are right, the liquid stuff smells like fish... as soon as I opened it, I started thinking of our last holiday. Funny hey, but on that holiday, we did a lot of fishing. So yes, watering the garden makes me feel like I'm in holiday mode, isn't that wonderful?

ps I'm not drinking it.

One of my favourite fruit :)
Got all excited with the pic above with the large red fruit....did think it was yours for a moment.
Give the little guy a chance - I've found mine (one bought and one grown from seed) very forgiving and hardy.

Hey Lissa, I still haven't tasted one. I might be waiting for quite some time I think! Are yours fruiting?
