Up a Ladder

Okay, so you are probably all losing just a touch of enthusiasm for the bananas...
But I'm not :p

They are so interesting, I can't believe I am a Queenslander and I didn't know how bananas grew. I won't tell you how I thought pineapples grew until only a few years ago.

Anyway, the big purple flower pod seems to be unfurling, and under each pod leaf another hand of bananas is revealed, it really is like an exciting pass the parcel. From what I have read, they will keep unfurling and eventually get to the male flowers, which have no banana on them. So far on this plant I can see four hands of bananas, and another two hands are peeking out. Each hand has around 10 - 12 fingers on it.

The bananas are all poking downwards too, with some of them just starting to curl upwards.

I really love the flowers, they are kind of primal looking I think. The sort of thing that might digest you if you sat down next to one for too long.

I think these bananas are the most exciting thing I've seen in the garden so far, something new seems to happen each day.
Of course, wherever there are bananas there are also monkeys.

ps I thought pineapples grew on trees.

Hi Ali; Just discovered your blog via Blotanical... I think I'm going to enjoy it. Love your attitude to life, Nature and stuff! I'm looking forward to hearing whether your boys inherit your enthusiasm for the plant world!

Oh god, this made me laugh. I can so feel and relate to your excitement at each little stage within the growing process. Love it!

Your bananas are great. I wish mine were as healthy. I planted two trees and they have never produced fruit.
Your blog is great too. I love it.

Hey Mark, they certainly have cultivated a love of the bugs that hang around vegetable plants, we are currently housing several caterpillars in shoeboxes as "pets". I went and sneaked a peak at your blog, your real life garden photos are quite spectacular, how lovely and neat are your beds, I'm quite envious.

Erin last night I was hesitating between going to a BBQ and posting photos of the bananas, I'm becoming a little nutty about them. Thank goodness I came to my senses and tore myself away from the bananas.

Missy, I have seen photos of your garden, and it puts mine to shame :) I love the photo of the white chicken under the black bamboo, what a paradise. I'll have to have a word with my Maurie dog, his garden needs a lot of work!

Always love your blogs and am also obsessed with bananas at the moment.

Missy banana plants need huge amounts of food (chicken manure is excellent) and a bit of potassium is also beneficial - as is lots of water. It took two years for mine to finally decide to flower!

Thanks again for a great blog Ali :)

PS You mean that pineapples *dont* grow on trees?! ;)

Donna, I still think it makes perfect sense. I'd definitely plant a pineapple tree.
